Mum and I are clearing out my Grandma’s house.
Yesterday Mum found a love letter from my Grandad to my Grandma which he wrote in 1952, when they were dating.
My Grandma was in hospital and was due to have an operation to have her appendix removed. She had obviously been concerned that he would date other girls while she was in hospital and in the letter my Grandad said “why would he want to go out with other girls when he loved her”.
He wrote about how calm and brave he thought she was in light of the fact she was about to have an operation and that he would have been scared to death if it was him.
He put xxxxx at the end of the letter and wrote “times hundred thousand” underneath them.
I had never really thought of my Grandparents as being “in love”. My Grandad died when I was 17 and it was only then that I really came to understand the depth of love my Grandma had for him.
My Mum and Dad divorced when I was 8 and Mum never got seriously involved with any one after that so Grandma and Grandad were my only ‘within family’ childhood experience of a married couple.
The letter has given me a deeper insight into the person my Grandad was 17 years after he died and over 60 years after it was written.
The paper it is written on almost glows with positive energy.
Love and hugs
